An online degree is only worth what an employer, a university admissions office or a government recruiter will accept it for. That is the whole test. A programme can have a professional website, a familiar-sounding name and a persuasive counsellor on the phone, and still leave you holding a certificate that nobody downstream will honour.
Checking is not difficult, and it takes about ten minutes. It is worth doing before you pay anything, not after.
Recognition is granted per programme, not per university
This is the part most people get wrong. A university being recognised does not mean every course it advertises is. Approval to run programmes in online or distance mode is given for specific programmes, for specific academic sessions.
So a university may be perfectly genuine, and its regular on-campus degrees entirely valid, while the particular online programme you are being sold sits outside what it has been approved to offer. “The university is UGC-recognised” is not an answer to the question you are asking. The question is whether this programme, in this mode, for this session, is approved.
Where to look
The University Grants Commission’s Distance Education Bureau publishes the list of institutions approved to offer programmes in online and distance mode, along with the programmes each one is cleared for. Look your university up there yourself rather than relying on a screenshot someone has sent you.
Two things to confirm while you are there:
The programme you intend to join appears in the list, not merely the university’s name
The approval covers the session you are enrolling for. Approvals are periodic, and a programme cleared three years ago is not automatically cleared today.
If a counsellor is reluctant to let you verify this, or steers you away from checking, treat that as the answer.
What a recognised online degree is worth
Where a programme is properly approved, a degree earned in online or distance mode is treated as equivalent to the same degree earned on campus. It is valid for employment, for higher studies, and for public sector recruitment on the same footing.
Equivalent does not mean identical in every respect: some employers and some competitive examinations attach their own conditions, and a few professional fields regulated by their own councils sit outside this framework entirely. If you have a specific job or exam in mind, check that body’s own eligibility rules as well. But the blanket assumption that an online degree counts for less is simply out of date.
Five questions worth asking before you pay
Which body has approved this specific programme, and for which sessions?
Will the degree certificate mention the mode of study, and does that matter for what I plan to do next?
What exactly is included in the fee, and what is billed separately — examination, re-examination, study material, convocation?
How are examinations conducted, and where?
What is the refund position if I withdraw in the first few weeks?
Ask for the answers in writing. A genuine institution will send them without fuss.
The short version
Verify the programme rather than the brand. Confirm the session. Get the fee structure and the refund terms in writing before any payment. Ten minutes of checking is a small price against three years and a fee you cannot recover.
If you are weighing up a specific programme and want a second opinion on whether it stands up, our counsellors will look at it with you — including telling you when the answer is that you should walk away.
